Practicing for Disappointment

With an unexpected day of due to my region's inability to handle frozen water, I took the time to watch the 2008 remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still. It seemed like a pretty innocent move to begin with, a benign remake of a classic from the SciFi canon, but it soon unleashed unexpected consequences.

If you have seen the movie, then you can skip this... IT WAS BAD. I'm not talking boring, I'm not talking a poorly executed remake, I am talking it is horrid, an abomination. I had to euthanize it after viewing.

I then took a shower to wash of the memories of an aborted Klaatu, and it dawned on me, this could be The Watchmen. The first comic I ever read and really enjoyed could become a bastardized piece of Hollywood lore in less then a week. Regardless of Kevin Smith's fanboy soothings, the entire world is looking toward Friday with dreaded anticipation. Already, we know that there are changes, the squid is cut from the net and The Black Freighter is benched.

While I will be disposed with pressing Phish business on Friday night, I have to wonder, how bad will the disappointment be? Will the icons of yesteryear and highcom be reduced to merchandising and marketing tools, or will it just be a steaming pile of compromised trash? Or there is always the off chance that it could be relatively good, at least it doesn't have Keanu in it.
